Boys Junior Varsity Soccer, Boys Varsity Soccer · OA Varsity rounds out regular season with 2-1 win @ Centerville

Number 9 in the state OA traveled to Centerville for a match on Tuesday night and came away with a hard fought 2-1 victory.  This is the first time that we have played Centerville in boys soccer.  Last year we were both playing in the regional’s and I was talking to their Coach and we decided that we needed to play each other.   As we were both looking to upgrade our schedule. You don’t get any better in anything you do if you are not pushed and playing better teams makes your team better. A 1-0 lose to a good team is better than a 10-0 win against a bad team.

Centerville came out fired up as their coach told me before the game they were excited to play a ranked team. They scored early in the game by getting behind our defense. They played a through ball that their striker made a good run on and scored.  We thought that he made the run early and that he was offside’s but didn’t get the call. Our defense really buckled down after that. Mark Hoog has really stepped up his game and has taken a leadership role from his fullback position. Our defense is our key to success. When they control the game it makes the mids and forwards job so much easier.  This was a very physical match a lot of grabbing and pushing from both teams which made it difficult for the Ref’s especially since they were doing a 2 man crew instead of the usual 3 man. We kind of let this get in our head the first half worrying about every call. We talked about it at half time and decided that we had to play the way the game and not worry about what was called or not called. We came out a different team the second half and had them on their heels for most of the half. We talked about leaving it all out there on the field. Brian took this to heart as he was determined to do whatever he needed to do to put the ball in the net. Hayden got the assist on the first goal and his hustle play was a direct result in the second goal. We subbed early and a lot and I believe that worked to our advantage. We were by far the fresher team at the end. I told you that all of those cemetery runs would come in to your advantage. This again speaks of the depth of our team.  We needed somebody to give us that energy so I inserted Nick Moorman up on the front line who normally plays sweeper for the JV team.  I told him to run as hard as he could and cause havoc the way  Jordan Kramer did for us last year. He did exactly what we needed him to do. We need to keep this energy level up to fulfill our quest.

The Varsity ends their regular season with a record of 12-3-1 now let’s get ready for the tournament where we plan to make a deep run in.

We got to play a ½ JV game after Varsity and we scored early on in the first minute. Stuard scored his first of 2 goals on the night with a nice shot all set up by the mid field.  His second goal came late off a restart. Luke Ruter scored the second goal as he got all the way to the 6 yard line. Elliot Jarman making his first appearance in the goal for us had the only save of the night. We have ben working with Elliot the last couple of weeks in goal as he asked if he could give it a try. We took 19 shots in 40 min. of play remember back earlier in the year when we couldn’t find a shot. This shows the work these boys have put in this year working hard in practice against the Varsity. Our defense only gave up 3 shots on the night.

JV record now stands at 3-4-1 with 1 game remaining on Saturday at East Central game time noon be there by no later than 11:30a this will be a self drive.
