News · Swim team holds end of year banquet

The OA Twister swim season officially ended in March. Coaches Kat Bryan and Jerry Fry welcomed with swimmers and their families to an outdoor banquet Sunday evening.
With assistance from 2019-2020 Team Captains Lana Lischke and Paris Raab, the coaches presented awards. Juniors Elizabeth Gigrich and Griffin Pfitzer were awarded trophies for the Twister Award.  Freshman Lauren Richards and Noah Schenk received most improved trophies and The Rookie of the Year was presented to Freshman Charlie Furlow. The Coaches Award trophies were presented to the 2020-2021 Team Captains Amelia Austin and Tyler Wuestefeld.
With 19 swimmers and covid challenges, the coaches were proud of their swimmers performance.
”Despite everything we persevered this year and the program keeps growing,” Coach Bryan said.
According to Coach Fry, Elizabeth Gigrich made it to Sectionals this year, placing 15th in the 50 Freestyle.
The OA Men finished 10th overall in the Medley Relay, ahead of Edgewood, Lawrenceburg and South Ripley, with a time of 2:00.11, Coach Fry said.  The men broke into the 200 Free Relay for the first time in three years and finished with a new school record of 1:40.94, besting the old record, set in 2009 of 1:48.14.
Individually, Tyler Wuestefeld placed 13th in the 50 free and finished with a new OA record of 24.07. He placed 15th in the 100 Free, with a new OA record of 54.12. Charlie Furlow made the A heat of the 200 Free in 6th place and finished 7th with a new OA record of 1:51.67. He placed 9th in the 100 Back with a new OA record of 58.30. Charlie also set new school records of 59.85 in the 100 Fly; 59.85 and 2:17.60 in the 200 IM.
Coaches Bryan and Fry said they will miss outgoing seniors Emma Beckman, Paris Raab, Peter Lewis, Lana Lischke, Mia Keller and Nate Geis. With spots opening up on the team, Bryan is already planning her relay line-ups. This summer, she will be coaching a few of the OA swimmers in the Batesville Swim Team summer community program.
